Aluminum alloys are alloys, of which aluminum (Al) is the main metal. Typical alloying elements are copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon, tin and zinc. There are two main classifications, namely cast alloys and wrought alloys, both of which are further subdivided into heat treatable and non heat treatable categories. About 85% of aluminum is used in forged products such as rolled plates, foils and extrusions. Cast aluminum alloys can produce cost-effective products due to their low melting points, although they generally have lower tensile strength than wrought alloys. The most important cast aluminum alloy system is Al–Si, where a high silicon content (4.0–13%) helps provide good casting characteristics. Aluminum alloys are widely used in engineering structures and components that require lightweight or corrosion resistance.


Since the introduction of metal skinned aircraft, alloys composed primarily of aluminum have been very important in aerospace manufacturing. Aluminum-magnesium alloys are lighter than other aluminum alloys and have lower flammability than alloys with high magnesium content. Without anodizing and / or proper painting procedures, a white aluminum oxide protective layer will form on the surface of the aluminum alloy. In a humid environment, galvanic corrosion occurs when an aluminum alloy is electrically contacted with other metals having a higher positive corrosion potential than aluminum, and an electrolyte that allows ion exchange exists. It is called dissimilar metal corrosion, and this process may cause spalling or intergranular corrosion. Aluminum alloys may not have been properly heat treated. This causes the internal elements to separate and the metal corrodes from the inside out.
